Raiders of the Lost Ark, starring Harrison Ford, Karen Allen, and Paul Freeman, introduced Indiana Jones to the world and brought the classic adventure movie genre back to the big screen in 1981. It always takes itself just seriously enough, mixing in enough humor to keep you from being overwhelmed with all of the action.
The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, starring Martin Freeman, Mos Def, and Sam Rockwell, is a science fiction comedy based on the first novel in the increasingly inaccurately named Hitchhiker’s Guide Trilogy. It is faithful in spirit to the source material, and it is a rather enjoyable film, especially if you are a fan of British comedy.
While You Were Sleeping, starring Sandra Bullock, Bill Pullman, and Peter Gallagher, is an excellent romantic comedy that launched the careers of Bullock and Pullman. Although set at Christmastime, this movie is a great night or family night movie any time of the year.
A Christmas Story, starring Peter Billingsley, Darren McGavin, and Melinda Dillon, is a great Christmas movie about a boy that only wants that one perfect gift for Christmas that can be enjoyed by the whole family. It is a great period piece based on the Jean Shepherd book In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash.
Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Nick Stahl, Claire Danes, and Kristanna Loken, is a decent apocalyptic science fiction movie about the threat of machines declaring war on mankind, though as a part of The Terminator series, it is the weakest movie of the series.
Jurassic Park, starring Sam Neill, Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, and Richard Attenborough, is a science fiction classic about the dangers of using science to create without asking if we should. There are a few rather graphic scenes, but otherwise, it is a great movie that the family can enjoy together with proper parental guidance.
Grosse Pointe Blank, starring John Cusack, Minnie Driver, Jeremy Piven, and Dan Aykroyd, is a dark comedy that explores growing older and realizing that your work life isn’t your whole life, especially if you are a gun for hire. It’s not a family friendly movie due to the violence and strong language, but it is a decent date night movie.
