Love Language: How Do You Express Love?
As we approach the gift giving season, there are many different types of gifts that we can give. Gifts are not always physical, material things. Author Gary Chapman has described five love languages defining how we receive love from others. We all have a different love language, and it is important to understand your own as well as your partner.
What Is Your Love Language?
Words Of Affirmation
If your love language is words of affirmation, it means that you feel love when your partner encourages and compliments you. It can be as simple as complimenting you for a job well done or comforting you after a hard day at work.
Acts Of Service
If your love language is acts of service, it means that you feel love when your partner does things for you. It may be cooking a nice dinner or folding the laundry. Any time you do something for someone that could be considered a chore is an act of service.
Receiving Gifts
If your love language is receiving gifts, it means that you feel love when your partner gives you a thoughtful gift. It could be something extravagant like a piece of jewelry or something simple but meaningful like a bouquet of flowers.
Quality Time
If your love language is quality time, it means that you feel love when your partner spends meaningful time with you. It can be a date night or taking a trip together. Quality time is the time that you spend together focused on each other.
Physical Touch
If your love language is physical touch, it means that you feel love when your partner shows affection through physical touch. It could be through kissing or getting a massage. Any act between you where your bodies make meaningful contact is how you feel love.
Importance Of Understanding Your Love Language
It is important to understand what your own love language is. If you don’t understand yourself, you can’t communicate to your partner how you want them to show you love. Knowing yourself and what you want will allow you to share your desires with your partner.
It is also important to understand how your partner receives love. Understanding your partner’s needs will help you show them love in a more meaningful way.
You and your partner may have different love languages. If you understand that you both have different needs, it makes it easier to fulfill each other’s needs. Understanding each other’s needs can make your relationship more meaningful for both of you.
